What's in my bag

This is the first and possibly last "What's in my bag" blog post. This could due to be the fact that it might take me several years to actually finish reading the books I have in it, in that case expect another "What's in my bag" blog post two years from now or maybe just because I get feedback from people that think it's a pointless post. Hopefully it won't be the latter.

So what's in my bag?

Well, I am sure it is quite obvious from just looking at the picture but for those people who want a breakdown with description for the individual items then here you go.

Night & Low-Light Photography, Tony Worobiec - I bought this book to help me with long exposure shots and because I have an interest in Night Photography.

Professional Asp.Net Design Patterns, Scott Millett - As some of you may know I am a .Net Developer and quite simply we need to keep learning so I am reading up on Design Patterns to refresh my brain as well as increase it's capacity (wish me luck).

Motorola Xoom - yes my new toy and I love it. All I need to say.

Moleskine - well, to write in.

Contact Lenses - self explanatory I think.

So, there you have it... the contents of my bag. Pointless post? You decide... but keep it to yourself ;)

I have decided that my first on-topic blog post is going to be about photography. I will not be focussing on any photographs I have taken but those of others and try to demonstrate how a person’s definition of art differs from the next.

Most people are signed up to at least one social network website, this most likely being Facebook (or the equivalent). Myself, I am also a member of Twitter and Flickr – all of these expose the user to a wide range of work, each potentially being completely different from the next piece. What one person sees as art or quite simply a good photograph, another person may not. This is fine, people obviously have their own taste but sometimes you need to remove yourself from that comfort you are most familiar with and experiment with what may be classed as a little alien to you.

Since and possibly before I bought my camera I have been following an Edinburgh Photographer on Twitter, James Christie. I was walking around the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh one day and I was about to leave. I posted a tweet to express how unsuccessful my photographs had been. James replied to my tweet explaining that a good photo can come from anywhere and then showed me a photograph of beer taps in a pub (see Pub Bokeh). Basically, if a photograph is taken well you can make something as simple as beer taps look quite special.

When taking photographs you are always going to feel that its not quite what you wanted or possibly as good as you may have thought it to be. It's human nature to be critical of your own work but it is surprising how many people take photographs and don't realise how good they are.
Coming back to the topic of unusual objects for photographs brings me on to someone else I follow on Twitter, Thegrammarnymph. Today Thegrammarnymph posted a photo of wool, again not something I would usually photograph and I am sure nor that of the everyday hobbyist/photographer but there is no denying it makes a good photograph.

Another photograph Thegrammarnymph has snapped is one taken the other night at sunset.

So basically, take yourself out of usual comfort level, photograph what isn't usually the norm for you and you never know it might be one of the best photographs you have taken to date.

Now all I need to do is take some of my own advice. Don't worry about what others are thinking as I assemble my five foot tripod. Just get on with it.

Déjà vu

Déjà vu - I think have been here before.

It must be over a year since I tapped away at my first blog post and unfortunately, it didn't really amount to much! Second time around I'm hoping I can find the time and motivation to continue and write posts that will quite literally blow you away... ok, slight exaggeration!

So, what am I going to write about? In all honesty, I'm not too sure yet but if I said it would probably involve Photography and .Net programming this shouldn't be much of a surprise to those who know me! What I do know is, if you are looking for amazing writing skills that are grammatically bulletproof, I fear you will be disappointed! Not from the lack of trying of course.

I intended this post to be short and sweet so I think I will end it here.
